Rex Thracum, Martis ex Bistonide Nympha fil. qui, cum Prognen, Pandionis Athenarum regis filiam, uxorem duxisset, eius etiam sororem Philomelam per speciem visendae sororis abductam vitavit, vitiataeque lingoam praecidit, arctissimaeque eam custodiae inculusit. Quod facinus cum illa indicare non posset, acu in tela depictum sorori suae transmisit. Quâ re cognitâ, Progne ultionem in Orgiorum tempus differt: quô tempore matronis pluribus comitata, quae Bacchantium ritu thyrsos et cornua gestabant, sororem carcere eripit, Bacchantisque habitu indutam in aulam perducit, ubi cum illa communicatô consiliô, Itym filium direptum dilacerat, patrique comedendum apponit. Quod cum ille ex pueri capite, sub cenae finem in convivium allato, cognovisset; iamque strictô gladiô ad ultionem properaret, Progne mutata est in hirundinem, Philomela in avem sui nominis, Itys in Phasianum, Tereus autem in Upupam.
